Allium sativum

GARLIC

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Bottom instructs, “And most, dear actors, eat no onions or garlic, for we are to utter sweet breath.”

Some people are convinced that garlic works primarily by keeping other people far away. There’s something to be said for that, as garlic is pungent and lingers on the breath, sometimes veritably seeping from the pores, but there’s more to the healing powers of garlic. It produces a chemical called allicin (one of 30 some sulfur compounds) that’s released when garlic is crushed, chopped, or chewed. This releases several other sulfur compounds that all work together to heal and promote health. If only everyone ate it every day, then nobody would be annoyed by the scent!
